Bonita Springs History

In the 1870s, surveyors working for the United States Government explored the Southwest Florida region. After the workers left the region it was given the name "Survey." During the late 1800s, huge plantations were established to grow pineapples, bananas, and a variety of tropical fruits.

In 1912 a man from Tennessee made plans to expand the town of Survey. He decided the name Survey would not entice people to move to the area and the name was changed to Bonita Springs. It was named after the local medicinal spring.
